Ve školním roce 2023-24 jsme na naší škole měli možnost hostit americkou studentku Shelli Ann Selby, která byla další v řadě zahraničních studentů přijíždějících na Gymnázium Petra Bezruče v rámci výměnných programů.
Shelli se na rok stala nejen neodmyslitelnou součástí třídy 4. C, ale svou přítomností obohatila také hodiny angličtiny v mnoha dalších třídách. V průběhu roku se aktivně zapojila do života školy. Byla členkou reprezentačního týmu starších děvčat v okresním kole basketbalového turnaje, jako rodilá mluvčí usedla v porotě školního kola olympiády v angličtině a stejně jako spolužáci jejího věku se stala součástí typicky českého kulturního fenoménu – tanečních lekcí. Celý rok se poctivě věnovala studiu češtiny v rámci hodin českého jazyka pro cizince a své teoretické znalosti uplatňovala v každodenní komunikaci.

When I arrived at Gymnázium Petra Bezruče for my first day of school, I was extremely nervous. I had no knowledge of Czech, and I didn’t know if any of my classmates would speak English. I also had never been the “new kid” in a school before, so I was nervous that I wouldn’t make friends or that the language barrier would make it harder to make connections. But when I walked in, I was immediately greeted by a teacher who led me around the whole school and introduced me to my classmates. Everyone was extremely welcoming, and all of my classmates spoke very good English. They didn’t mind the fact that I didn’t speak very much Czech, and they took it as an opportunity to practice with a native speaker. The teachers were very adaptive and tried their best to give me things to do even though I didn’t understand most of the lessons, and they even set me up with Czech lessons so that I could work on my language skills. I feel really lucky to have been placed here, and my year has been everything that I could have wished for. It was hard at times, but my classmates and friends made everything so much easier. I know it will be hard for me to leave, but I’m so excited to return and visit in the future! I’m very grateful to the school for helping me have a successful exchange year.
